The walk of life

I couldn’t tell you if my early memories of my mother are actual memories or if they are the made-up kind of memories you get from pictures and stories you have been told throughout your life.  I’ve spent a few days trying to recall my earliest memory of mom and I haven’t been able to pin-point the real, actual, pulled from the compartments of my brain memory.
My mom told me the story of my birth, but not all of it.  She said that she had a doctor’s appointment on September 26th so she took the bus into town.  The doctor told her to go home and pack her bags because she was having a baby that day, so she did.  I don’t remember if she ever told me who took her to the hospital because apparently my 17-year-old dad was in math class so he didn’t take her.  What were these children doing having a baby? There must have been so much fear surrounding my entry into this world.  I was born at 3 minutes till midnight.  My due date was September 27th.  My mother always said that is why I am always early for everything.  Of course, this isn’t the real memory I am searching for.
The next memory I have is also a story.  Mom told me that once, when I was an infant, she fell asleep while I was laying on her stomach.  She rolled over and I rolled off her, off the bed, and onto the floor.  I was unharmed (children are so resilient) but I don’t think mom ever got over it.  When I turned 1, mom couldn’t afford to buy me a cake until 3 days after my birthday when she got paid.  She also never got over that.
When I was a toddler, my mom was making pizza and put the pizza sauce can in the garbage, with the can lid still attached like can lids do when you use the can opener and don’t cut the lid completely off.  I wanted to help, so I took the can out of the trash and tried to open it using my pinky finger.   I screamed, my mom screamed and carried me to the next-door neighbor’s house in a panic.  I had to have the can removed at the hospital, I almost lost the tip of my pinky finger.  I still have the scar.
Did my mom ever tell me happy stories?  Or is it that I only remember the scary and sad ones?  Still, no actual memories.
When I was two, we lived in Germany and I “remember” these huge (huge to a 2-year-old) throw pillows on the floor in the living room.  They were there for me to sit on and watch cartoons, or eat my breakfast, and sometimes I would take naps on them.  I’m not sure why I associate that memory with my mother, she isn’t even a part of the memory, but I do, probably because it’s not an actual memory but another one that she told me growing up.
I think my first actual memory of my mom was when I was about 5 or 6 years old.  That seems like a long time to live before having memories.  I had pretty, long blonde hair as a child (I know, strange).  She took me to the salon to get my hair cut and the stylist told her that I had lice.  Mom was mortified. She took me home and washed my hair with lice shampoo then she combed through all my long hair with that stupid lice comb and it hurt so badly.  A few weeks later, I fell asleep with gum in my mouth and she had to cut all my hair off anyway.  I remember thinking that was ironic and I didn’t even know what that meant. She was devastated – my mother always loved my hair, I think it was the thing she was most proud of as if it were an accomplishment on her part.
My parents had a little collection of records.  I was fascinated with them.  My favorite 2 were Dire Straits and Air Supply.  I would make up little dances and when my mom’s friends would come over, everyone had to sit down and watch my “performance.” Once, I turned on “The walk of life” by Dire Straits and I started walking across the living room with my hands out, fingers stretched, shaking them like tamborines. THIS was my impression of “the walk of life.”  From that day on, this was mine and my mother’s song.  Whenever it came on, we would shake our hands and mimic walking across the room.  This has ALWAYS been one of my very favorite memories.
A few weeks before she died, we were laying in her bed talking.  She made a comment about how her 14-year-old cat had managed to stay alive for her and how the cat might actually outlive her.  I said, “Mommy, do you think you will die soon?” “I don’t know,” she said.  “Are you scared?” I managed to get out as my throat swelled and I felt the sharp headache that you get when you fight back tears with all of your might. “No, I’m not scared.  Are you?”
I couldn’t hold the tears back any longer.  I laid in her arms and cried, “Yes.”
She held me while she fumbled with her phone, I knew what she was doing.  Sure enough, her phone started playing..
“Here comes Johnny singing oldies, goldies
Bebop, a lua baby, what I say…”

This song actually makes no sense.  Kind of like the way I feel about life right now.  However, there is this nugget at the end that makes the whole song worth it and I believe it is what my mother was trying to tell me that day:
“And after all the violence and the double talk
There’s just a song in all the trouble and the strife
You do the walk, yeah, you do the walk of life
You do the walk of life.”

Life is hard.  Sometimes, unbearable.  I spent the years I had with my mommy laughing (and crying) and singing a song that was ultimately about how it would all end.  Through it all, you just keep doing this walk called life.  It’s beautiful, and fun, and ridiculous, and ironic, and scary.  It also makes absolutely no sense, but you walk anyway. That’s what she was trying to say.

She didn’t know what she was doing on September 26, 1979 … and she probably didn’t feel like she knew what she was doing on July 28, 2017 … but she walked, and that’s what she wanted me to do.

3 weeks & 3 days without her

When mom called me on April 3rd, 2017 I thought maybe she saw something on TV that she wanted to tell me about, or she heard a new song that she wanted me to listen to, or maybe she needed me to look something up on the internet for her ... these were usually the reasons she would call me in the middle of the day at work.

"Hi, Mommy!"
"Hi, honey, I am in the hospital...Tim brought me to the emergency room last night because my left arm was hurting and he was afraid I was having a heart attack.  They have found a tumor on my left lung...it is 2 inches in diameter."

Surely she meant 2 centimeters ... she must have heard them wrong.  "Okay, Mom... I'll be there as soon as I can."  At 2am the next morning I left NC and headed out to WV for the first of what would be 10 trips up and down I77 over the next 4 months.  I slept at the hospital with mom the night of April 4th - she was in so much pain ... I just couldn't understand what was happening.  I remember the nurse coming in the middle of the night and I said to her, "What is going on?  Why is she in so much pain?"  I will never forget the look she gave me.  It was the exact look that the actors on Grey's Anatomy give to family members when they know what is wrong with their loved one, but the can't tell them yet because they haven't confirmed it.  She knew it was cancer ... and at that moment I knew it was cancer.  I laid back down on the most uncomfortable fold-out bed in the history of the world and held my breath and fought back tears in silence until the sun finally came up.

April 5th began the true torture... really people shouldn't have to ever go through what the words, "You have cancer" put you and your loved ones through.  I didn't say a whole lot to friends or family while mom was sick (I didn't feel that she really wanted people to know how bad it was).  She lost her voice, down to a whisper ... she would tell people on the phone that she had laryngitis.  She didn't like pity, she didn't like to be weak ... she has always been the strength of our family and I believe she intended to continue to be that until her last breath.  I am not as strong as her.  I had 4 panic attacks in the first 2 months - the final one scared me so much that I sought medical attention - I never told her.

When we found out that mom was sick, I knew in my head that it would be hard but there was no way to really comprehend how hard it would be until I went through it.  I knew it would be hard when she died, but there was no way to really comprehend how hard until she died in my arms.  Now I have lived 3 weeks and 3 days without her...I knew it would be hard but ...

The earth keeps spinning, the sun comes up every morning, people are rude in traffic... I have to keep eating dinner, brushing my teeth, washing clothes.  My life continues, but I have to learn to function as a drastically wounded and different person. I know that it won't always be this way and that wounds heal but healing right now feels like forgetting and that is terrifying.

They say that there are stages of grief but that you don't necessarily experience them in any certain sequence and sometimes you go through certain stages multiple times and sometimes more than one stage at once.  I think I am still in shock and denial.  I have recently experienced moments of reality setting in and then I shut it off because crying hurts so badly.  I hope that by sharing my story I will work through what I am feeling and in some way it may help someone else.  I have had a hard time finding stories to connect to and I think that is because people want to forget and it is too difficult to open up to others. There is nothing wrong with that, but I just feel like my story has to help someone - I will make sure that something good comes from this.

As I have the strength, I will share more stories - it is healing for me and I want to make sure that I document everything while it is still fresh in my mind.  Thanks for reading.

Running with Hulk Hogan

Wow..It's been way too long since I have written a blog!  This used to be something I was so passionate about ... and I lost that passion.   I guess I thought that I had run out of things to share, or time to share any of it.  Either way, that is unacceptable.  So, here it goes.

Just about everyone knows by now that I am in the middle of training for a half marathon that I am running the day after my birthday in September.  I have worked up to 8 miles and have done this distance twice now.  I am feeling pretty good about my physical ability to make the 13.1 mile distance ... but this hasn't come without a lot of speed bumps.

I realized quickly that a regimented running schedule was not something that ... let's say ... fit me.  I love running.  I love the pure, simple, idea of running for the sake of running and how it makes me feel.  I don't like HAVING to run.  I also feel like long runs during the week just don't really fit into my busy schedule (nor my desire to sleep until the very last second).  So, what is a girl to do?  Well, NOT running during the week is not an option.  Listen, distances over 8 miles shouldn't be taken lightly, injuries can happen if you don't prepare yourself .... so.... I have to run.  I'm going to try shorter distances during the week but just more of them and see how that goes.  I'll keep you updated.

In other news, the long distances on the weekends have been GREAT!!  I so enjoy being out in nature and the fact that it is so dang hot out means that I have to do my long runs earlier in the morning (which for some reason I don't mind on the weekends because I am in no rush).  Early morning runs offer opportunities to see nature "waking up" ... and I love it!  Three weeks ago I saw a deer ... like a real baby deer about 20 feet away from me ... eating leaves.  He/she just stood there chewing leaves and I just stood there staring in awe.  We stared at each other for a good 3 minutes before it ran off.  This morning I must have seen 3 or 4 bunnies ... cute little cotton tailed bunnies!

None of this beats what I saw last weekend on my first 8 mile run!  I was coming up to the end of mile 4 - feeling like I was going to die and there was no way I could possibly do that loop around town AGAIN!  When all of a sudden, out of nowhere, running right toward me was HULK HOGAN! Yellow tank top, yellow bandana, blonde handle-bar mustache... running right toward me.

"I'm hallucinating ... this is how I will die... running down the street and the last person I see is Hulk Hogan.  The paramedics will tell my mother that I lost my mind in the ambulance murmuring something about Hulkamania and ripping my tank top."

It seriously took everything inside of me not to stop the man and ask if I could take a selfie with him - because NO ONE is going to believe me.  I waved, he waved ... we continued on our separate paths.  I spent the next two miles trying to convince myself that this was just a man that looked a lot like the Hulkster .. and not actually him.  "Hulk Hogan is a HUGELY tall man, this man was average height.  Hulk Hogan would not be running on the greenway in Concord North Carolina, Adrienne."  It was a good distraction.

At some point around mile 7, we crossed paths again.  I am strangely sad to report that this man was not Hulk Hogan.   I am happy to report that I was not hallucinating and I didn't die on that run.  I totally wish I had the guts to ask for that picture!

I have loved you all along

When I really got serious about losing weight I'm not really sure I knew what I was getting myself into. As a matter of fact, I can look back now and I realize that I didn't even believe that I could do it. Losing weight was a novelty. Something I would tell myself I would do but deep down inside I thought just hoping was good enough. I guess I figured that I needed to at least have the illusion that I tried to make myself feel better.

I liked watching shows about weight loss, I read blogs and magazine articles. I can truly say I was an expert at weight loss. I had lost weight. I had lost a significant amount on several occasions. I knew HOW. I could even tell others HOW.

One of the themes that always came up in my studies was the theme of loving yourself and forgiving yourself BEFORE you could shed the pounds. I even named this blog "loving me now." But I didn't. I couldn't. I was so ashamed of my failures. I had constant negative talk in my mind. I made up what I thought other people must think about me. It was torture. I hated the mirror, I hated clothes, I hated Adrienne. (I'm on the verge of tears just typing this). No one on this earth was meaner to Adrienne than I was. Why?

Honestly, I don't even know. My mother is the most accepting person I know. She always taught me to be kind to myself. She always told me how beautiful I was. I didn't learn it from her. I always knew that models were edited and weren't real. I didn't learn it from them. I taught it to myself. I decided something was wrong with me. I became the punishment for what I viewed as failure. Who was I to love and forgive such a terrible failure?

So...how do I accept this person and love her enough to do something good for her? Do it for her and not for anyone else? Put her first? She didn't deserve it.

None of those thoughts went away until the pounds started coming off. It was like I was being peeled back and slowly I could breathe. Every breath got easier and easier. I pictured myself happy. I focused all that negative energy on the treadmill. I cried A LOT. Every tear and every drop of sweat was hate...leaving my body.

A couple of weeks ago I went for a morning run. I felt like I was flying. The wind was blowing on my face and the sun was shining on my skin. I was alive. The song "Far Away" by Nickelback came on Pandora and I heard this lyric:

'Cause I needed
I need to hear you say
That I love you
I have loved you all along
And I forgive you
For being away for far too long
So keep breathing
'Cause I'm not leaving you anymore

For the first time, maybe ever, I realized that I have loved myself all along. I loved the real Adrienne...not the one I had created with hate. I just needed to forgive myself for not treating her like I loved her. I was finally able to forgive.

Maybe you relate to all of this. Maybe you're the meanest person that you know, but only to yourself. There is hope. One day at a time. Start pulling away at those layers. Not every weight loss tip works for everyone. Don't be hard on yourself. Only you can get to the place you need to be to accept yourself and that may not happen right away, thats okay, but it does need to happen.

My heart has been breaking for others who find themselves in this cycle of hate. I'm here if you want to talk.

Expectations

My towel wrapped around me tonight.

For most people this is not profound. "Yes, Adrienne, towels do that." Maybe they have always for you. Not for me.

Maybe it has been wrapping around me, completely, for a while and I just now noticed? I'm not sure.

I've officially lost 75lbs. It has taken me a total of 11 years and 3 separate tries, but I am 10lbs away from the scale reading 199. There are a lot of things I expected would be by now, but it never occurred to me that the towel would wrap all the way around.

If you've never been "morbidly obese" (God, what a ridiculous term) then I don't expect you to understand the following.

There are things that I expected. I expected to be proud of myself, and I am. I expected that I would feel better, sleep better, look better, and I do. I expected all of these things and more. I expected to step on the scale and read 199 and suddenly every struggle for the past 11 years would rush through my mind like a movie and that I would be so overwhelmed with emotion that I would collapse on the floor of my bathroom, sobbing with joy as if this miracle has just taken place before my very eyes without my involvement.

There are also things that I did not expect. I didn't expect to feel kindof numb. I didn't expect to still see myself as the fat girl. I didn't expect people to treat me differently (they do). I didn't expect people to be jealous, or judgy, or weird with me. I didn't expect to be surprised that the towel would wrap around, or that Jillian Michaels videos would no longer be hard, or that running would one day not be enough to take off the lbs. I didn't expect to still be unhappy with pictures or that I would still not fit into American Eagle jeans.

The list goes on and on.

Here is the thing. Life is full of moments where we expect certain things to happen or certain moments to be a certain way. We can't rely on that. Anything worth doing is going to be hard, much harder than you expected. If you want to start a journey to lose weight, or change careers, or start a family, then you have to throw all of your expectations out the window because the final product may not look like what you thought it would.

Here is what I think will happen when I see 199. I will be full of pride for what I have accomplished. I will remember all of the hard work and realize that I DID that. Every pound came off because I made choice after choice,  not because of some miracle that just happened to me.

Or maybe I'll collapse on the ground. Who knows?

Tears will probably be involved.

I'll let you know.

Sunday, June 10, 2012

Well, hello there. How is your Sunday afternoon? Mine is nice and quiet (well, except for Max laying here growling at something he hears outside - he does that when I don't have the TV on).

Things with me are going really well. I am getting used to my new routine - let me share it with you:

6:00 am - wake up
6:30 am - leave for work
7:00 am - arrive at work
7 - 7:45 am - work out
7:45-8:30 - get ready for work (at work)
8:30 am - 5:30 pm - work (see a pattern developing here?)
5:30 - about 6:15 depending on traffic - drive home from work
6:15 to whenever I happen to be able to fall asleep - do chores, watch tv, hang out, etc.

Yes, it is very busy.

I do have good news! I got my insurance cards in the mail today!! I haven't had insurance through my place of employment - well...ever really. I did have it at one place for about 2 months and was never able to use it. I'm very excited to be able to go to the doctor again!

I really wanted to share some pictures with you in this blog - but it seems that my ipad won't let me do that - booo! I decorated my cubicle this week ... I got really creative and I'm so much more comfortable at my desk now!

I'm also offically on Week 3 of Couch to 5K! I'm really happy to be running again - I am also really happy to be focusing on me and my health again - it is really important to pay attention to your health...I wish I had done so sooner.

Wow, I'm so unhappy that I can not share pictures with you. I have to figure out a way before my next post.

Well, have a great week everyone...maybe next time I will have some funny story to report to you ... until then...

The "backwards scissor": A Yoga story

So, I promised a story.

My new workplace has a gym. It's pretty great that I could get out of my monthly gym membership...I've been working out there before work. They also offer a yoga class on Wednesdays at lunch, which I thought was free...I was wrong.

So, I attended 3 classes before discovering that I had to pay. The class itself was good, hard, but good and I liked it. Except the part where my co-workers are there with me. Now, I've never really cared much about people watching me workout. You can judge me all you want, but at least I'm doing something. Besides, I'm free to think whatever I want about you too...so be careful where you tread.

Yoga is an interesting form of exercise. Before I tried it...I thought it was for twenty somethings who wanted to buy cute workout clothes and go to the gym to be seen, but didnt really want to sweat...just "stretch" and say they worked out.

Have you ever been really wrong? Me too.

Yoga is no joke. Especially at my "size". That instructer would calmly say "warrior two" and my mind immediately thought, "yes, this is war...and I'm not winning!"

The girls I work with are really nice girls...they are grown women, they act as such, and I have no reason not to like them or to feel negatively toward them in any way. However, there was one moment when that instructor (Jenny is her name) would describe a pose and I literally laughed out loud, just in time for me to look around to see if anyone else thought it was as absurd as I did that she would even suggest that the human body could get into that position, and to find that they were already gracefully in the "backwards scissor" pose.

I don't know about you, but I'd like to clearly state that my body doesn't do "scissor" anything...much less backwards. For a split second I was so jealous of those girls.

Jealousy is such a terrible monster of a thing. It will come on when you dont expect or ask it to. Yes, there are times we choose to be jealous, but that is usually after the emotion has introduced itself, uninvited. I hate it, like it killed my family or something.

Jealousy robs us of our potential. We see someone else succeeding and jealousy creeps in and forces you to focus on what you don't have or can't do...so that you never realize you probably can... sometimes better.

Look, I might not be able to do the "backwards scissor" ... But I might. I didn't try. I was too busy moping about the fact that they could. How dumb.

I hope to go back to the class once I am in a better place financially, and then I will attempt that pose...at least then I'll have health insurance, you know, in case I need medical attention afterward.

Life is a constant battle. Jealousy is something I don't have time for if I want to win the war...

"What did she say? Oh, yeah....warrior three. Bring it on."

I know you missed me.

Well, Hi there! Long time no blog!

I really do hope you saw the notification that I had written a new blog and got as excited about it as I am to write it...although I doubt it.

Either way, here I am and here you are reading it...and that makes me happy.

Life has been...ummm life. We've all had those days where you're laying in the bed at the end of the day and you think to yourself, "If I had known all THAT was going to happen...I might have opted to not get out of bed this morning." But, that's how life is, a big roller coaster that you've never ridden before. I'm kinda happy it's like that though because all y'all know that as you get older you can't ride the same roller coaster 20 times like you did when you were a kid. You gotta change it up with a visit to the air conditioned ice skating show every once in a while or....well, you know.

Whatever... im old, ok?

Even though im glad life is not boring there is a little fact about me that a lot of people dont know. I HATE change. I'm not talking like "wow, change is just really hard for me." I'm talkin like I turn into a cranky monster of a woman when things in my life are unstable. I guess I can handle things like a new arrangement of furniture in my living room, or a different hair color now and then...but that's not the kind of change im talking about and its certainly not the kind of change I've experienced in the past 4 months.

In February I made a decision to start looking for a new job. It was a gut wrenching decision to make...trust me. I won't go into the details, I'll just say that I loved my job...and I argued with God and with myself for months over this decision.

If you've come out of your bedroom anytime in the last 5 years or so, you know this is NOT the time to leave your job if you have a good one....so, not only was I doing that...but I was banking on the hope that someone else had also done that recently, and therefore created a vacancy in which I was perfectly qualified. I basically bought a scratch-off ticket in the job market lottery.

Then, I kinda hit the jackpot. Not that I don't miss my old job or the people there...I miss them more than I can even put into words. But, when it comes to trade-offs...I did pretty good. I like the people, I like the atmosphere, it pays well, plenty of opportunity to grow. As a matter of fact, my boss has already told me, in fewer more vague words, that he eventually wants me to be a supervisor. Nice.

Something pretty fantastic has come from all of this, though. (Which is a plus because the 40 lbs I put on under all of this stress was pretty terrible) I have been forced to remember what it feels like to be TOTALLY and absolutely dependant on God for my next steps. It has been a while since I have been put in that position (one that I used to find myself in almost daily). What an interesting, terrifying, loving place to be.

I also started volunteering at a Women's shelter quite a few months back. As a matter of fact, I am sitting in the dining room at the house right now. I think all of the families must be out celebrating the Memorial Day weekend because it is almost silent here - which never happens. It's peaceful. To my left are 4 high chairs and Im thinking to myself how ironic that it is so quiet and peaceful right beside chairs that ... Im pretty sure babies consider forms of torture by the way they scream and pitch fits in them.

Anyway, lots of changes in my life lately. I am starting to feel that it is time to focus on my health again. I get caught up in life and my well-being goes on the back-burner. I do love the summer. It stays light later so I don't feel like all I do is work - I actually have time to get outside and enjoy the sunlight.

Next blog ... Ill tell you about a yoga class I recently tried to take at work. You won't want to miss it!

Have a great Memorial Day weekend!!! Thank you to all who have served our country and have given us the freedom to enjoy our families, grill hotdogs, and hug the ones we love. You are heroes and I honor you.

The Types of People You Find at the Gym

I am a people watcher.

Urban Dictionary's definition of People Watcher -
"1. People Watching:
A Hobby in which you go out and watch people. The way they act, dress, & talk. Like bird watching except with people. Very entertaining."

I have been known to spend my entire lunch break at the mall (which is conveniently located across the street from my office) sitting in the recliners that they have on display from the furniture company ... just watching people.

I'm not really sure why this fascinates me so much. Maybe it is because I have an active imagination that I don't really allow to run free very often. When I watch people - I let my mind wander.

I wonder what that person's life is like?
I wonder what his dreams were as a child?
I wonder how those two met?
I wonder if she looked at herself in the mirror before leaving the house? (JUST KIDDING..kinda)

Those kinds of things.

"Adrienne...that is terrible - why would you judge someone based solely on what they look like?"

I'M NOT! I realize that these are actual people and I'm not passing judgement on a fact that I have fabricated in my mind - I'm simply writing a fictional story, for myself only, about their lives - I am fully aware that I am totally wrong.

I would be fine if other people did the same thing to me - actually, I expect them to.

Also, if you know me - you know that I would never think mean things about someone - so I am not going to explain myself any further.

Back to the point. I am a people watcher - I do this any time I am at the mall, or at the grocery store ... but especially at the gym. However, when I am at the gym I am doing less "story telling" to myself and more of just watching their actual actions in their habitat (because at the gym you can watch people for a much longer period of time).

I have found that there are certain types of people you can find at the gym.

Here they are in no particular order:

1. Testosterones: These are people (mostly men but not always) who spend the most time in what I call the "Testosterone Zone" (The free-weight/bench press area of the gym). These people like to look at themselves in the mirrors (look...this is not a judgment - this is a statement of fact). These people grunt loudly... a lot - I don't think they notice it because their music is up so loud in their ipods. They strap themselves to machines (I'm not sure why this helps them but it terrifies me - I feel like one day the gym will catch on fire and all of the testosterones will be trapped because they can't get out of their velcro straps). I think that testosterones must be poor - If the testosterone is a female, most of the time she has forgotten some of her clothes somewhere. If they are male - all of their clothes are ripped (like the arms are ripped off or their pant legs are ripped off) Im not sure what testosterones have against fabric - but it is bothersome (I guess it is less to burn when they are stuck to the machines during that fire so ... makes sense)

2. Cardio Bunnies: These are (usually) girls that are ALWAYS on the treadmill or the eliptical machine. But - you can tell that they are different that just average people. They wear high ponytails (this is so that when they walk or run their hair swings back and forth like those cheerleaders I used to go to Junior High with). Bunnies like to wear "baby doll" t's and short sweat shorts. I think that bunnies have had their makeup tattooed on their faces cause there's no way my makeup would stay on like that when I'm sweating - or is it just that their sweat glands don't work? Im not sure which -but they always look like they have JUST gotten on the treadmill no matter how long they are on there. Bunnies always wear ear buds with long cords - because they like their cords to sway to a fro in the same rhythm as their pony tails.

3. Gym Dwellers: These are the people that are at the gym EVERY time I'm there. It doesn't matter if I go in the morning or at night - they are there. It's like they live there - I don't blame them. It's expensive to be a member at a gym - maybe they can't afford to rent a place and the gym really has everything that they need - TVs, Showers, etc. I mean - why leave? These people know all of the employee's names by heart. They walk in the gym and they start waving at people like they just entered their own birthday party. Dwellers don't seem to do much working out. They do a lot of socializing - mostly with the employees.

4. Newbies: I admire these people the most. You can tell that they haven't been in a gym in a while because it takes them a few minutes to figure the machines out. Newbies always make me smile - because I was a newbie once and I know that once they get the hang of it - they will never have to be a newbie again. I'm proud of them for getting out of the house and taking a step toward being a healthier person. I know that they are thinking that everyone is watching them and judging them - but if they really knew what people thought it would encourage them. Im not talking bout self-centered jerks who judge them and look down upon them - Im talking about they average people (the majority of the gym) who are just glad that they have made a step toward becoming a happier person.

You see - everyone has in their mind that if they go to the gym that everyone will be thinking bad things about them. It just isn't true.

I actually spend more time watching Testosterones than anyone else - they fascinate me.

"When my arms go above my head, I get dizzy."

Yesterday was a good first day back on my healthy lifestyle plan (now we have to be politically correct when we refer to "diets"...this is my verbiage of choice).

I'm just kidding - I can honestly say that "diets" in the original sense of the word don't really work - it has to be something you chose to do for the rest of your life ... or else you just yo-yo diet ... kinda like me lately. I don't know why I think that I will do this for a set period of time and then once I reach that MAGIC number I can just go back to eating whatever crap I want and Ill look like Megan Fox.

Wow...totally off subject now .. I digress.

So, yesterday was a good first day back on my plan ;o) I stayed within my calorie range (but more importantly I felt satisfied with my food). It was beautiful and delicious and exactly what food should be.

Don't believe me?

Take a look at my dinner.

Shut up!

These were so easy!! I had some skewers just laying around from one BBQ I had like 4 years ago and I just cut up some peppers (all different colors just to make it pretty), chopped up some pineapple, and thawed out some shrimp. Layer them on the skewers and grill them for a few minutes on the good ole' George Foreman (if you don't have one of these...INVEST - it's so worth it!! - but get the ones that have the removable plates so that you can just throw them in the dish washer!) Seasoned with just a dash of Tony's for spice and Old Bay Seasoning.

I then made up some seasoned wild rice and - WALA! (I have no idea if that is how that expression is spelled!)

I ate 2 Kabobs and 1/2 of the rice - the rest is my lunch today!!

Then last night at the gym I was minding my own business on the treadmill when a trainer walked up and said, "I am doing a new "weight loss cardio" class on the treadmills if you would like to try it out." These classes are called "teasers" - my gym does them so that you can try out the classes they offer that are "fee based" - that just means that you have to pay more for them than what is offered in your regular gym membership. I always take the "teasers" because it is a change-up to my workout - It's personal training for free - and they offer them all the time.

SURE... why not!

It was me and two other ladies.

6 months ago - I would have SMOKED these girls. Showed them who's boss.

Last night...not so much.

They were both at least 10 years older than me and all I could think about the whole time is that 6 months ago I would have made them look like amateurs.

Well - it's not 6 months ago. It's now and I had to face the facts. I felt like death, walking up-hill at an 8 incline when 6 months ago I was running 5ks. At one point the trainer asked us to pick up hand weights and walk at an incline while raising the weights above our heads. I actually said the words, "When my arms go above my head, I get dizzy." Which is a true statement. (This is a sign that you don't have good blood pressure, by the way.) However, saying it in that moment felt so humiliating.

What am I saying???

I am a machine!

I am a runner!

I conquer!

Don't underestimate me!!

"When my arms go over my head, I get dizzy"?????????

This is where 6 months of not doing squat (literally) has gotten me.

I picked up those hand weights and I walked and I lifted and I pushed through it.

What does that make me now? 6 months later? Does that make me a failure because I doubted? Because I'm not where I was 6 months ago?

No!

It makes me a machine!

It makes me a conquerer!

I did it anyway - even though I hated every second. That is what it is going to take for me to get back to where I was 6 months ago. If that is what it takes then that is what I will do.

Anyway - that was my day. It was a pretty good first day back.

He will give you the desires...

2012 "Evolutions"
1.  Get below (blank) lbs.
2.  Save $(blank)
3.  Take better care of my skin
4.  Take better care of my nails
5.  Read through the New Testament

Bucketlist
1.  Wear a size (blank) jeans
2.  Get my nose pierced
3.  Take a vacation
4.  Read 2 books (not including the bible)
5.  Beat my 5k time
6.  Climb a rock wall
7.  Do 10 pull ups

Maybe "resolutions" aren't your thing.  To be honest - up until last year they weren't my "thing" either.  Mostly because I held myself up to a standard that I could never actually live up to.  That lead to disappointment in myself and instead of setting realistic goals that I could live up to - I stopped setting goals all together.

Not setting goals meant that I usually wasn't trying to improve myself at all.  I'm not really sure how I expected to grow as a person or in the Lord without any aspirations to do so - maybe I thought that God would just change me.  And though I believe that God can do that - I'm learning that (at least for me) He doesn't normally operate that way.

My scripture for the year is Psalm 37:4 - "Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart."  This doesn't mean that God will give you whatever you want.  No... no ... no.

This means that God will put HIS desires in my heart.  I believe that when I follow the Lord and "delight" myself in His Word and Will for my life - I will have His desires for me.  That means more than just spiritual things.  Did you know that God cares about everything you care about?  God cares about my nails, He cares that I am proud of my skin, He cares that I respect my finances.  God cares about whether or not I am healthy.

How do I know that He cares?  Because I care - and God has put his desires in my heart.

I know I don't normally talk about spiritual things in my blogs - but this is part of my journey (a huge part).  When you realize that your goals and your dreams were placed there by the Lord  - they become more than just resolutions - they become evolutions ... desires that change you from the inside out.

So I encourage you (if you haven't already done so) - take the beginning of this year and ask the Lord ... "What are your desires?  What are my desires?"  Write them down so that you can refer to them later... delight yourself and encourage yourself in the Lord.

He will give you His desires!

A little perspective...before the Holiday madness.

The Holidays are beautiful

The Holidays are peaceful

The Holidays are special times with family and friends

At least ... that's what we tell ourselves every year. But, what ends up happening?

Our Holiday ends up looking more like this:

There are literally hundreds of websites dedicated to helping people with what the medical community has labeled "Holiday Blues". Not only do people suffer from depression during the holidays but about 25% of us will suffer from "post-holiday let-down" in January. This all comes to a head because of the demands that others place on us and that we place on ourselves during the holiday season.

Just think of it..

You have how many presents to buy?
How much is that going to run up your credit cards?
How many parties must you attend?
And you have to have a present for each of those - for a random person that you don't even know?
Where are all of those holiday decorations? OH...all the way in the BACK of the attic.

Are you already starting to feel stressed?

You aren't alone.

"Gee - thanks for the uplifting blog, Adrienne"

Well...i'm getting there.

What am I going to do differently this year - to make my Holidays more enjoyable?

I'm deciding now that I will enjoy my Holidays. I will do less of the things that stress me out - and I will do more of what makes me happy.

What does that mean?

emoticon I may have to say no to a few parties.

emoticon I may have to buy gift cards instead of actual gifts (people like those better anyway)

emoticon I may have to purchase gift bags instead of wrapping crap.

emoticon I may have to stay home and watch "How the Grinch stole Christmas" - at least 3 times with a cup of hot cocoa ... LOADS of marshmallows.

emoticon I may have to enjoy the company of those around me - the dishes can wait.

emoticon I may have to sing Christmas carols - out loud.

emoticon I may take a few days to put up my decorations instead of trying to get them all up in 2 hours.

emoticon I may turn off the TV and just stare out the window as snow falls to the ground at night.

emoticon I may have to buy a pie from the store instead of making one from scratch ... I mean, I'm not a grandma yet.

So, what will you do to make your Holidays more enjoyable? What can you say no to? What will you say yes to? I think now is a great time to decide.

3 minutes in line at Wal-Mart

I went to Wal-mart today on my lunch break...

I had to get a few things to have for snack because, unfortunately, I am not very good at planning and I didn't buy apples to eat with my Almond Butter that I purchased from Trader Joe's over the weekend.

(*side note - I just ate a honeycrisp apple with 2 tablespoons of Trader Joe's Raw Crunchy Unsalted almond butter - it was like 270 calories just for a snack - but it was worth every SINGLE calorie!!!!!! Plus...it's not like it was cake!)

So, I'm standing there in line and I looked up at the woman who was two people in front of me. She stuck out. (and that's kinda hard to do at Wal-mart!)

There she was, paying for her groceries. She was a slim brunette, about 28 years old, with her hair tied back, makeup perfectly applied, in a business suit.

She looked kinda like this:

Except she had a red shirt on under her suit jacket. She also had on one of the largest engagement rings I have ever seen on person. I also noticed that she was buying fruit, lettuce, etc. Not a single unhealthy thing on the conveyer belt. (Yes, i do pay attention to what people are buying at the grocery store and sometimes I make judgements based on that - I can be a terrible person. I digress.)

Immediately I started imagining what her life must be like.

I even gave her a name, Claire.

Claire's life was amazing. She had supportive parents (both of them). Claire played volleyball all through school and made perfect grades. Her grades (and her daddy's bank account) got her into a great college where she worked hard and was so smart that she graduated Valedictorian of her class - with a Masters in Business Law at the age of 22. She went on to get hired at the most prestigious law firm in Charlotte where she has been the best lawyer on the team ever since.

One day, Claire got a little cold (which NEVER happens to Claire because she takes such good care of her body) so she went to the doctors office. Where she met him. The most handsome doctor she had ever seen.

He instantly fell in love with her. He showered her with gifts and won over her heart and they were married one year later.

Claire now lives with her amazing husband, in a beautiful studio apartment that overlooks the skyline of Charlotte. They go running every morning with their golden retriever, Sam.

All of this - in about 3 minutes standing in line at Wal-mart.

You know what is funny about this story. It's funny to me how many of you do the exact same thing that I did!

Someone very wise once told me to never compare what you know about yourself to what you don't know about someone else - you will always lose.

I don't know Claire. As a matter of fact, I never even said hello to the woman. I have no idea how she grew up or even what she does for a living.

Claire could be unemployed - and she was wearing that suit because for the past year and a half she has been going from one job interview to another with no luck.

Claire could be in an abusive relationship where he always buys her nice things but he treats her like property.

Claire could hate her life.

It's unfair to me to stand there and come up with fantasies and then feel bad about myself because my life isn't as good as Claire's.

If you have ever found yourself doing this - it is unfair to you too.

Stop it.

Top 10 reasons you should check yourself in the mirror BEFORE leaving your house

You know how David Letterman does the "Top 10" on his show?

Well, I decided (since I'm obviously JUST as famous as David Letterman) that I am going to start my own segment of this blog called...

Adrienne's Top Ten

(clever title - right??)

So....here we go -

Top 10 Reasons you should check yourself in the mirror BEFORE leaving your house:

#10 Because you should subject yourself to what others have to see all day first - it's only fair

#9 Because this is not 1992

#8 Just because you CAN button those jeans...doesn't mean you SHOULD

#7 Because you shouldn't be advertising to everyone that you are cold without saying a word (girls - you know what I mean)

#6 Because "Uggs" are called that for a reason

#5 Because accessories are there to HELP you

#4 Because no matter how hard you try - purple and red will never match

#3 Because bending over is sometimes required throughout the course of your day

#2 Because TIGHTS should never be worn as PANTS

And the #1 reason you should check yourself in the mirror before leaving your house....

Because you are beautiful, no matter what, and you should take some time to recognize that

Forget Halloween...Thanksgiving is scary!!

Today is November the 2nd.

Do you know what that means?

No, it's not my birthday....

It means that there are only 22 days until Thanksgiving ... (insert creepy horror movie music here)

"Adrienne...Halloween was 2 days ago. There is nothing to be afraid of!"

Really.. really? (Said with my most serious face)

I realize that most people get to this time of the year and they start breaking out the Christmas music, and putting up Christmas lights, and feeling a little touch of the Holiday spirit.

Yes, I love all of those things. I love Christmas!

But I'm not talking about Christmas.

Seeeee!!! There is a reason that everyone just skips Thanksgiving and starts celebrating Christmas on November 1st! Even if it is subconsciously - nobody really likes Thanksgiving.

The thought of Thanksgiving makes me want to do this:

Because I'm honest with myself.

Here is what everyone pictures Thanksgiving will be like:

And this is what ACTUALLY ends up happening:

Also...I don't understand some Thanksgiving foods. Like... Green Bean Casserole. I'm sorry - I realize that there is a "Green Bean Casserole Cult" out there that like has a fan club and as soon as you say Green Bean Casserole they start salivating uncontrollably - I don't want to offend any Green Bean Casserole worshippers - but I just don't get it.

My green beans are perfectly fine without cream of mushroom soup and onion crunchies - they are fine that way all of the other 364 days of the year - not sure why we suddenly have to cover all of our green beans in cream just because it is Thanksgiving.

I also don't get sweet potato pie. Wasn't pumpkin pie good enough?

So, I am starting to prepare myself for this dreaded Holiday. I'm thinking ahead about what I can do to make it easier on my waist-line. I found this article that might be helpful to you if you are preparing yourself too...

PS...I'm not the only one who's afraid!

Small things...

I heard this story once...

A man was talking about water and how necessary it is to sustain human life. I mean, just think of all of the things we use water for - cleaning ourselves and our stuff, hydrating our bodies, cooking our food, etc. Water is everywhere - and without it, we would die.

Water is a good thing ... as long as it comes in appropriate quantities.

The old saying is a true - you most certainly CAN have too much of a good thing.

Ask the people in Japan or in Thailand who have experienced tsunamis over the past several years. Suddenly, the same element that is in a glass of water or a shower becomes something to fear - because having too much water is dangerous and can also kill you.

The same goes for fire or...

sun light or ....

food.

You know, people tend to equate overeating with things like smoking or drug use or any other addiction that can be overcome. But, smokers don't HAVE to have a cigarette 3 times a day to survive.

I think that food addiction can be overcome - but it requires a certain self-control that is obviously in short supply in a food addict's life.

So - how do we find that self-control??

I think that self-control is hidden ... in the small things.

If somebody plops 2 dozen donuts in front of you - that is a big thing...it's easy to say to yourself ... "Self, that isn't good for you and you KNOW it."

But, if someone puts cheese and crackers in the conference room at the office - "Self, they don't fit in your budgeted meals for the day but it's JUST cheese and crackers." leads to "Maybe Ill have some of this dip too" leads to "Well, I already screwed up my eating today so Im going out for dinner." leads to "Well, Ill start over on Monday."

If you could have said instead... "Self, cheese and crackers do not fit into your plan - stick to the plan." AAAHA! There it is!!! Self-control - I KNEW you could find it!!!!

So....

Here is to me - finding my self-control again. In every area of my life.

Self, you know you feel better when you are controlling yourself. Your clothes fit better. You sleep better at night. You don't ache as much when you do strenuous activities. Remember how it feels to be proud? You know, all of your spark friends are right - you CAN do this. You motivate others - now motivate yourself! Look deep and forget about the past - this is life. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and do what you know you have to do - remember - it is the small things ... added up become a big thing. It works the other way around too - walk a mile when you don't feel like doing anything else - do that every day and it will add up!!! You've got this.

The Adrienne I don't want to become

I know that it has been a while since I have written a blog - but this one has been on my mind for a while. If you are looking for one of my funny banters about cake or cable TV - then you may want to skip this blog and wait for the next one ... I promise the old Adrienne will return. This blog is going to be more serious - and I am writing it more for my own sake than for yours. I want to be able to look back on this and remember - how I felt at this very moment, how I don't like feeling like this, how proud I am for how far I've come.

I don't know that I have ever actually come out and said this publicly in my blog before - but I'm getting ready to.

I have an eating disorder.

Yes, you can have an eating disorder and not be anorexic or bulimic.

I'm not going to go into WHY I have an eating disorder - I think that my struggle with my weight and with food is proof enough that I have a problem. It is not socially acceptable to point out that someone has an eating disorder if they are fat - even if that person is pointing at themselves - so you may be reading this and start to feel uncomfortable that I am talking this way about myself. It is ok, you have been taught (even if subconsciously by social standards) that if someone has a problem with their weight you should ignore it so as to not hurt their feelings.

This is good, to an extent. It is hurtful to be reminded that you have a problem - especially if it is not solicited. So, go ahead - take a breath and let all of your nervous fears be put to the side for a few moments - because I realize i have a problem ... and I want to do something about it.

When someone is fat ... there aren't usually interventions. Friends don't sit you down and say, "Im really concerned about you ... maybe you should do something." like they would if you were dangerously skinny, vomiting your lunch, or drinking yourself into a stupor at 3 in the afternoon.

No, most of the time people say nothing at all. They just stare... or say things behind your back...or imply...or make jokes. (Not your real friends ... they just say nothing or tell you that you are fine)

Ok, now that all of that pre-topic garbage is out of the way - here is the real reason for my blog today.

I found this article online:

www.foxnews.com/health/2011/03/31/ob
ese-ohio-man-dies-fused-chair-2-years/

Excerpt from article;

"A morbidly obese Ohio man has died after police found him fused to a chair he had not moved from in two years and were forced to cut a hole in the wall of his house just to get him out, WTOV-TV reported Wednesday. The unnamed 43-year-old man's roommates called police when they found him unconscious.

He was taken to Wheeling Hospital in nearby West Virginia, where he later died."

Wait ...

Rewind...

"The unnamed 43-year-old man's roommates called police WHEN THEY FOUND HIM UNCONSCIOUS."

That's right ladies and gentlemen. This man sat in a recliner for 2 YEARS because he was too fat to get up. His girlfriend brought him food and his other friend lived in the room next door. I'm not even going to get into the fact that these two roommates should probably have said something - to someone BEFORE they found him unconscious. How about, "Hey, my roommate has been sitting in a chair of his own waste for X number of months - maybe someone should help him."

I digress.

Im going to step out on a limb here and say that this unnamed 43 year old man didn't plan for his life to go down like this.

Im going to say he didn't wake up 2 years prior and say - "You know what? I think Im going to just park myself right here in this recliner ... and never get up. That sounds like a pretty good idea." (I realize that is a dream for most men, but the reality of the situation probably isn't as appetizing as the dream itself, guys)

Ok...so here is how this story should be a lesson to me and you.

Fact: I am currently at a weight that is unhealthy for me.

However, I am not at a weight that would make it necessary for me to sit in a recliner for two years just waiting for the day that police officers have to come to my house and cut a hole in the wall to get me to the hospital.

And guess what...

I don't want to do nothing until that becomes necessary!

"Wait...wait...wait - WAIT.

Adrienne, you aren't THAT fat. I mean, yeah...you could lose a few pounds - but come on - you don't really think you would ever get to the place where you had to be cut out of your house do you?"

Yes, I absolutely think that I could get to that place - if I give up.

Guess what - if you have an eating disorder - this is your reality if you give up too.

So, here is what I will do.

I, Adrienne, refuse to give up. Even if I re-gain the same 25 lbs every 6 months and then kill myself to lose it again. I will not give up. I will try everything in my power to continue to fight. I will surround myself with people who say to me, "Adrienne, you are doing awesome and I am proud of you for not giving up." I will remind myself of this 43 year old unnamed man (who, by the way, was a person who had feelings, interests, hobbies, who loved, cared, and lived).

As long as I can still breathe - I will not give up.

Hoarding & Obesity - the parallels are shocking!

I guess I have been watching a lot of TV the past couple of days because today's blog is inspired by things I have seen on television that have given me insight into human nature.

You can learn a lot about a society based on what you can see on television.

There is a show on the TLC network called "Hoarders - Buried Alive"

If you have never seen this show, I recommend that you watch at least one episode. It will open your eyes to an entire labyrinth of the psychological human being. It is shocking how much I have learned about myself by watching someone else's struggles.

I will admit that the first time I saw the show, I had a reaction that is probably similar to the one you will have or have had if you have seen it. I thought, "How on God's earth does someone think that living this way is ok?"

You see, I am a clean person. I feel peace when things are organized and I am able to rest when my house is clean and things are in their place. So, it is easy for me to judge someone who uses piles and piles of "stuff" as a coping mechanism and security "fortress" - which is what most of these people do. Stuff becomes the only thing in their lives that they can control. So, the process of cleaning out the stuff becomes more than just a simple spring cleaning yard sale. It becomes an emotional assault on their lives.

I realized something today.

If you are a significantly overweight person then re-read the paragraphs above and replace the word "stuff" with the word "food". Aren't the parallels shocking??

I know that there are people out there who feel "peace" or they are able to rest when their bodies are well taken care of and they are healthy. They would look at a person like me or at someone who is morbidly obese (which I used to be) and think to themselves, "How on God's earth does someone think that living this way is ok?"

It is hard to understand that, just like hoarding, morbidly obese people do not decide one day "I think I will ruin my life and eat so much that I put myself in danger." Food, to them, really does equate to security, safety, and control. Even though a healthy person may look on at an obese person who is trying to get healthy and say, "Wow, they are starting to take control of their lives." It feels just the opposite to that obese person. At times, it feels like you are so out of control that it is emotionally impossible to handle.

I think that it is safe to say that everyone has their own ways of dealing with life. Some people start smoking, some people exercise, some people move in and out of relationships, some people hoard, and some people turn to food. Of course some of these coping mechanisms are healthy and some are not.

Why would I write all of this? I just had a revelation that human beings are all the same. You may think it is disgusting that I would say at my weight that you are just the same as me. You may think you are better than me for whatever reason. But, guess what? We are the same.

We all deal with life.

So, the next time you see a person who is extremely overweight. Try to see them as a human being just like you, with people they love and issues they deal with. See past their fat. I realize that most people who would read my blogs are not the type of people who would make fat jokes or look upon someone else in disgust, but we all have prejudices that we don't even realize are there. I know I did.

It was so easy to judge these people on tv ... until I realized that we really are the same...my coping mechanisms are just different than theirs.

You know, I have had times when saying no to pizza sends me into literal tears.

(That was hard to admit to the whole world)

That may be shocking to you. But that is reality to someone who struggles with weight issues. Just like throwing out cardboard boxes can send a hoarder into panic mode.

The great thing is that once you recognize the problem, you can start working on how to fix it. Your weight issue may not be something that you can fix by "just going to the gym" or "just eat less". It may be something you have to dig deep and figure out about yourself. Maybe you need to find another way to cope with life issues?

Anyway, Im glad I got this out. If you are reading this and you need to talk to someone, Im a great listener. Or you just have questions for me, Im an open book.
